Hello Marie, I don’t have any factual evidence to prove as to where the Penners actually originated, but I can tell you what I remember being told by older family members. I don’t if it will be of any help to you, but I’m happy to share. According some of my older family members.... There are two different Penner families, who are not blood related. One set is said to be from Germany. The other being Native American. I was told that the Penners who came to America from Germany had a family member who befriended a Native American Chief. And that when time was coming for some of this tribe to find work, when the lands weren’t flourishing enough to survive on alone, they needed to have last names. And since they didn’t, the man offered up his own last name to this tribe. Which they accepted. I have no idea when this may have taken place, and have never seen any evidence to show for sure that it even happed at all. But I thought I‘d go ahead and share it with you anyway. Even if it isn’t true.... it still makes for an interesting theory... Hope you find what you’re looking for. Good luck! ~Cheryl |
