One of the submissions to the FHC, mentioned that Paulus Paulusen Paelon was from Palenburg. There is a Ubach-Palenburg in Germany on the border of the Netherlands. The other typical spelling was Peele(n). There is the Peele region, which is a large marshy area, nature preserve. On census records for the Palen branch that went to Ontario, they put German as nationality, even though they migrated from Netherlands 150 yrs prior! Perhaps, there was descrimination against dutch from the british in canada? Remember, that often when immigrants came to the US that their names were anglized, spelled phonetically, or spelled the way other ethnic names that sounded the same. |
