It sounds to me like you succesfully downloaded a GEDCOM from the LDS server and now have a file, "xxxxx.ged" stored in a flolder on your hard drive.
(I can't download anything from the LDS site, I get an error message stating my security is too high or I am using the wrong language, or the file can't be found, I think it has to do with the JAVA setup on m computer, but I am not certain.)
If you have the ged file on your computer:
Open your genealogy program, PAF, FTM, FO or whatever, and create a new, empty database (Family file or whatever your program calls it), then IMPORT the GED file into the program. It should grind away for a bit and then show up as a regular family tree, just as if you had typed it in yourself.
