I don't think that you're doing anything wrong.
When I call up the report function in PAF and ask for a family group record, the box that comes up has a check-box for "print to file", which on my setup is checked; a preview button near the top, which when pressed displays the FGR on screen; at the very top is the print button, which when clicked and the "print to file' box is checked brings up a save file box showing the default save directory and the generic file name *.rtf. You need to replace the * with the name that you wish to give to the report and it then gets saved as an .rtf file that can be opened in Microsoft Word, Wordpad or other word processing programs. Wordpad is found on all Windows computers, while you'll only have Word if you've installed it or Microsoft Office.
If the "print to file" box is not checked and you click on the Print button, the box for the default printer comes up and if you click print there, it goes to your printer.
If you've saved the .rtf file (rtf stands for Rich Text Format, by the way) that file can then be edited if you wish to make changes. The edited file can then be sent to the printer through the word processing program.
