My PAF file currently has 300435 individuals, and is NOT unwieldy at all. The index still generates in a flash, just like it always has with PAF 5.2. I do find myself using the Advanced feature a lot -- listing only those folks in Massachusetts, or New York, or Ohio, for example.
I too know a little about programming; I even wrote a genealogy program back in 1975 when I was using a huge room-size IBM main-frame with the Dartmouth Time-Sharing System (DTSS). Our main concern back then was memory (i.e., lack thereof), so all data to be stored was reduced to fill the minimum number of bytes.
