The thing I would look at is NOT hard drive space, but RAM. That's memory that the computer has to do it's WORK. Hard drive space is STORAGE capacity. Memory/RAM has numbers like 256mb or 512 mb. I have 1gb of ram on my system for work (or processing). Are you sure the other one is not just opening up "behind" the first file. After opening the second file, you need to go to WINDOW and choose either CASCADE or TILE HORIZONTALLY or TILE VERTICALLY.
