I suggest you check out Rhio's Samplers:

She has some great graphics to make a web site look great at no charge as long as you adhere to her copyright requirements. Also she has a listing of web sites that has used her graphics - you can visit those and get some good ideas for both look and content.

Another good source I've found is on-line access to Cornell University Library's "Making of America Digital Collection". They have, for example, apparently a complete set of both Union and Confederate field reports from officers during the Civil War. I use the digital collection to write histories of units that ancestors served in, histories of relevent citys and countys, etc. For quotations you must obtain copyright guidelines and permission from them but it was no problem for me.

Pictures, of course, enhance interest.

Enjoy.
