To keep from losing my info or corrupting a file - they are all saved in the 4 available formats. Then the file is saved as a test file until the merge / import works.

I had the same problem or similar problem. In the mail file I found the oldest person of the new gedcom file someone had sent me. Then I deleted that oldest person and their descendents.

Then, the import / merge was completed from the new gedcom file. It all worked smooth as a cumcumber.

Service packs address common bugs or security flaws in released software. Although they sometimes introduce new (albeit minor) problems themselves, they are not likely to harm your computer system.
