I knew William had died early in 1870... my sources said Apr, but that was an oral history, not a death record.
Thanks for finding Martha's grave. She was my GGreat Grandmother. Funny, I was just by the corner where this cemetery is located just last year. My cousin is retiring to a cabin at Sister Lakes nearby.
It's news to me about the 2nd marriage of Martha to John Cook. I did some searching out on him (hard to do since it was a common name, but I think I've found the right guy). He was born in Canada about 1818-20 and had married a Louisa ? born about 1825 in Canada and they had 3 children born in Canada, then a 4th child born in Michigan. 1870 Census has him and family living in Eau Claire, Pipestone Twp, Berrien County Michigan... same place as my GGreat Grandmother. That they were married in 72 says that Louise probably died soon after the census. Well, I found that she had died in May 1870 in Pipestone Twp, Berrien Co. One record says she was born 12 May 1824 and died 9 May 1869, but that year can't be right if she was alive in 1870 when they did the census. Another record says just May of 1870... that's more plausible.
Odd that they buried Martha then with the Griffin name attached, unless the marriage didn't "take" for long...he died or they got divorced? Got to do more digging on this one. Thanks for digging up that Find a Grave site where this John Cook character was mentioned. Opens up a whole 'nuther can of worms.
I've got marriage and death records for most of William and Martha's children, but they didn't reveal anything about where William was born, other than PA. Martha was born in a part of Virginia that later became part of West Virginia. I have more info on her mother's side... the Srackengasts..I know where both her grandparents are buried in Preble Co Ohio, but next to nothing about her mother Rebecca or her father "J" Burgess. Someone thought Rebecca remarried after J Burgess's death, but that marriage and her new name cannot be found. Martha was living with an aunt and uncle Srackengast at the time of her marriage to Wm in 1848. Those same folks also moved to Pipestone Twp, Berrien County Michigan next farm over to Wm and Martha and are buried there.
