The Register's and Orphan's court record Index will give you the book and page numbers for wills. Westmoreland County, like most counties in Pennsylvania, files their records using the Russell Index system. It is not difficult to use, but is more time consuming online than it is with the actual books in front of you. If you go to Image 6 on the index for letters C-D, it explains how to use the book. So for the name Campbell, the key letter would be M and the records would be found on the pages using the sections numbered with a 2, so 12, 22, 32, 42, etc. You need to know the initial of the first name of the person you're researching in order to know which section to look in. Since I'm not at the courthouse to keep flipping back and forth, I make notations of the image numbers every time I locate where they are in the indexes, because it's a guessing game to get to the right page sometimes. Image 44 in the C-D index is the start of the B-Campbell names. The names are not in alphabetical order, but chronological order. But beside each name is a list of what records are available and where to find them. Unfortunately, not all of the Westmoreland County probate books have been put online. However the older Will books are there, and the index will show which book contains the will, and on which page. I'm sure that's about as clear as mud, but there is an index, it's just a matter of learning how to use it and then you can find what you're looking for :) Good luck! |
