Thank you Tim and Lois for helping me think this out. I am happy to learn that Solomon Jesse Douds was born in Vanport. My grandfather's name was Van and my father's name was Van. We always wondered where that name came from. Perhaps it was the first part of the name of where great grandfather was from. As for Lucy who was his sister, I found that she worked as a servant for William Sherwood who manufactured pottery in New Brighton, Beaver, Pennsylvania. She was only 15 at that time of the 1880 census while her brother Solomon was 17 and listed as step son of Thomas Robbins in Martins Ferry, Ohio. I am going to write a letter to the geneology society of Beaver Falls and pay them to dig up anything they can to help me with this search. I also found a James Douds from Vanport who went off to the Civil War but nothing about him returning, dying, or anything. I wonder if Rachel was Solomon and Lucy's mother and James could have been the never to return father. If that is so, then it is possible that she moved on to find a way to support herself. She is several years older than Thomas Robbins. I cannot find a marriage certificate for them either. They also could have been common law husband-wife. Thank you both for your help. I will post anything breakthroughs I get on my great grandfather.
