I see that Mary Brooks (aka Mary Stamper) married Thomas Oneby. I see birth and mariage dates for them that are extremely far apart.TWO "official source quotes" have them being married on different dates, i.e. 17 July 1727, and 27 July 1737. If Powell Stamper Ownby was born to Mary's first husband, Powell Stamper, then adopted by her second husband Thomas Oneby, this would make him born before Thomas and Mary were likely married, as most sources say Powell Stamper Ownbey was born about 1740. He could not have been born 1719 as one source said, in order to marry Elizabeth Ownbey, aparently his step-cousin. Also, Thomas must have been born as early as 1710 to 1720. Where does thisplace him with the grandfather-father-and grandson trio that came to VA from Lancaster, England? (Arthur Ownbey or Onby, son John Ownbey, and grandson John Ownbey?) Thomas' last name is the only instance I have seen that is consistently spelled Oneby, and not Onby / Ownbey, as are the first of the family in America. |
