My wife's great aunt was Susan Selena Coldren, born in Clark Co., IL, 1882. Her brother was Fremont Coldren, who was well known in Starke Co. OH. In about 1902-03, Susan was a servant in the Hillibush household in Canton. James McConnell was in the US Army and came to Canton as a member of the Honor Guard for President McKinley's burial. He stayed on in Canton as a guard for almost two years. In 1918, Lt. McConnel and Susan Coldren were married. Soon after, he was sent to France where he was fatally wounded on July 23 and died on July 25. His body was buried in France and, in 1930, he was returned to the U.S. and buried at Arlington Cemetery.

Lt. McConnell was a hero of the Philippine Insurrection, and awarded the Medal of Honor. For his actions in France, we have been told that he was again awarded the Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Cross.

No one in the family knew James McConnell and it is only recently that we have gained any knowledge of him. We are searching for any information that will lead us to their marriage records. Any knowledge of Susan Coldren will also be appreciated.
