Barbara, Are you still looking for this information?
Hugh died between 1870 and 1875 in Putnam Co., Ohio and Margaretta moved back to Tuscarawas County, OH. She married Sherrod (or Sherad) Ricketts on March 12, 1875. This was a second marriage for both. I found her in the 1880 census as Sherrod's wife. The children are from his first marriage to Mahala Stevens Ricketts who is buried at Holmes Church cemetery in Tuscarawas County. Also in the 1880 census, it shows Hugh R. age 21 living with an Aunt and Uncle: John and Christy Ann Ryan Leggett. Their farm is the land that we now own, Hugh got it when Christy Ann died in 1906. Margaretta died in 1885, or between 1885 and 1890 and is buried in New Cumberland cemetery near her family. I found her tombstone.
I have found very little info on John or Charles. Somewhere I came acrossed the information that both John and Charles were living in Fairfield Twp., Tuscarawas County, OH as of June 22, 1880, but I didn't write down that source. My guess is it came from a census report. But......There was a son of Charles' that lived with Hugh R. Downing and wife Clara Gartrell Downing. This was information handed down thru the famiy, and shows on the 1910 Census where he is living with Hugh and Clara. The son's name was Evern Emmett Downing. He and Hugh R.'s son, John Benjamin married sisters. John married Lydia Stacy and Evern married Leona "Glee" Stacy, daughters of Richard and Sarah Huffman Stacy. John B. and Lydia, Evern and Leona Glee are all buried at Roxford Cemetery in Union Twp., Tusc. Co. OH.
My mother in law remembers talk of Uncle Buddy Ryan who lived on what is now Echo Lake Road, near Roswell, Oh., this would be Samuel Bud Ryan, Margaretta's brother. This also where the old maps show were land owned by the Ryan family, near New Cumberland. When I asked if she had heard of anyone named Ricketts, she said yes, Uncle Eddie Ricketts. All of this was before her time, she only heard stories. Eddie Ricketts was Sherrod's son, and quite possibly Margaretta's. Everything shows that the children were Mahala's, but Margaretta married him March 12, 1875 and in the 1880 census, it shows Eddie to be 4 years of age. I will try to learn more on this, as it just came to me as I was typing. Nancy
