Here is an exerpt rom a letter written by my Aunt Jeanne C McCall, Grandaughter of George washington Haines:
"I beleive the story about the orphanage concerned George Washington Haines [my maternal grandfather]. His mother died leaving four sons, including the twins, George and Thomas Lincoln Haines. His father was in the Navy, and the oldest boy was old enough to go into the Navy with his father. The other boys were taken to an orphanage by Wm McKinley [Secretary of the Navy at that time]. The twins stayed there until they were ten years old when they were adopted by different farm families. It was the practice at the time to adopt a boy when he was old enough and big enough to do a man's work on the farm."
