I am seeking males age 6 or older who have either (1) a direct, blood-related ancestor who served as a Union soldier or sailor in the Civil War or (2) the brother of a direct, blood related ancestor who served similarly. My goal is to form a "camp" of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War in Hocking County. Ohio already has 20 actives camps including Chillicothe, Athens, Middleport, and Marietta.

The Sons of Union Veterans was formed as a male auxiliary in 1881 to the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), which was the largest Union veterans' organization after the Civil War. It received a charter from the Congress of the United States in 1954 due to the efforts of fellow member and famed WWII general, Douglas MacArthur.

Its purposes are: (1) to educate the members and the general public to the service and sacrifice of Union soldiers and sailors, (2) to preserve Civil War battlefields, artifacts, monuments, and history as related to Union veterans (3) to mark and to catalogue graves of Union soldiers and sailors (4) to commemorate Memorial Day as originally set aside by the G.A.R. to remember Union soldiers and sailors (5) to promote patriotism and respect for the American flag and (6) to honor living veterans of modern wars.

See the national website for the organization as:

I would be glad to meet with anyone who is interested and living in Hocking County about the organization. I have listings for defunct "camps" that once existed in Hocking County as well.
