Attemting to solve a mystery my great great grandmother Mary Ann Bender or Haviland b 1862 Ohio married 1884 to John Tschannen. She was said to of lived with a foster family with last name Haviland but have not been able to locate anyone living in the Defiance Co, Ohio with that surname. Mary's marriage record lists her last name as Haviland. But when I looked at my great grandmothers birth certificate lists Mary's maiden name was Bender as does Mary's certificate of death.
