Jim, you can check the census for the years & places you want by ordering the microfilms from your nearest LDS Family History Library. Go to www.familysearch.org & click on Library catalog for info. Or you can subscribe to one of the sites that offer the census images; Ancestry.com or Genealogy.com. I have Ancestry.com.

I checked Sullivan Co. for Taylors in 1850 & `60. There are 26 in`50 & 19 in `60. I checked the ones in Thompson & a few others. I did not find the family you found on the 1880. I did find an Alexander Taylor family with a 10 yr. old James in 1860. They were not in Sullivan Co. in 1850. I then checked NYC for the name Alexander Taylor in 1850. There were several but only one had a year old son named James. Some of the info. on this NYC family is at odds with the 1860 Sullivan Co. family, but the census was notoriously off on ages. I`ll type up these two familes below. Maybe you can tell if they are yours.
