That's a fascinating puzzle. The answer may be a mistake entered into the 1900 census:

1900 census for Hector, Schuyler, NY
Fremont Dean June 1856
Eva wife June 1863
Howard F. son Sept 1881
Bert M. son Aug 1883
Crissy S. son Mar 1886

Eva has had three children, 3 living married 20 years

1880 census

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace
Christopher S. DEAN Self M Male W 52 NY Farmer NY NY
Cynthia J. DEAN Wife M Female W 49 NY Keeping House NJ NJ
Fremont DEAN Son M Male W 23 NY Farm Laborer NY NY
Eva DEAN DauL M Female W 17 NY At Home NY NY
Addie DEAN Dau S Female W 15 NY At Home NY NY
Will DEAN Son S Male W 13 NY At Home NY NY
Bertie C. DEAN Dau S Female W 7 NY At Home NY NY

Source Information:
Census Place Hector, Schuyler, New York

Can you see what I notice here? Eva had only three children, all living in 1900. No daughter listed, but there was a "son" by the name of Bert.

Fremont Dean had a sister named Bertie. Could "Bert" have been a daughter, not a son, named after his sister? I see no other explanation. I found no Bert Dean in later censuses, so "he" may have died.

This isn't my family, but I love puzzles.
