John Oldfield is listed in the 1840 census of Rome, Oneida County, New York. He and his wife, Susan, and other family members are sometimes found recorded as Ofield. One son used that spelling almost exclusively throughout his life.

John and Susan were both born in England. Her last name has yet to be learned. The details of their immigration are not known. One record gives "at sea" as the birthplace of their daughter Tiney Ann, who was born around 1826. If she was born at sea, this would indicate her parents had been married in England and were immigrating at that time, and that they had not been brought here as children by their parents.

Other Oldfields from England were in Oneida County in 1850 - the family of James and Sarah at Utica. James was 40, Sarah 37, and their children 15 down to 7, all born in England. They moved to Palmyra, Wayne County, Pennsylvania. Their relationship to John, if any, is not known.

John's occupation is listed on the census as laborer. His name is included in an 1849 Rome newspaper listing residents for whom letters were being held at the post office.

John was born between 1790 and 1795 and is presumed to have died before the Oneida County census of 1870, when Susan is listed as the head of her household. No tombstone has been located for John. The 1840 census indicates Susan was born between 1800 and 1810. The 1875 NY State Census lists her age as 62, or born around 1813, but a marker in Rome Cemetery shows Susan Oldfield was born in 1807 and died in 1876. The index of Oneida County wills shows the name Susan Oldfield. Presumably the county should also have a probate record for John or guardianship papers for his minor children.

John being at least twelve years older than Susan, it's possible that she was not his first wife. Assuming that all the children in their household in censuses were their children, they were the parents of at least thirteen, named here, with further descendants below.

1. Tiney Ann (Oldfield) JONES REES, b ca 1826
2. Robert H. Ofield, b ca 1831

NOTE: The information shown here is not the result of my own research from original sources, but has been compiled from the Internet. Children's names were found in census records. Occasionally a child who grew to adulthood is never found in the parents' household in the census, so the lists of children shown here are not necessarily complete. The dates of birth of some of John and Susan's children can't be ascertained from censuses because their ages don't correspond from one census year to the next.

Numbers 1 through (13) denote the children of John and Susan. A number following a digit indicates that person's order of birth. For example, 11 indicates the first child of Descendant 1. The number 231 indicates the first child of the third child of Descendant 2. When there are more than nine children in a family, parentheses are used around numbers 10 and above.

1 Tiney Ann Oldfield, b in NY in January between 1826-1828, d 21 Sep 1909, m/1 around 1847 John Elias Jones, b in Wales ca 1808, d 20 Nov 1859; m/2 at Neenah, Winnebago Co WI, 14 Dec 1865 James Rees, b ca 1822 England, d 17 Feb 1884. All three are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Neenah. Before marrying Tiney, John Jones had children born in Wales in the 1830's and a daughter born in England in 1845. He may have been in the wave of Welsh immigrants who spent time in NY before moving on to Wisconsin in the 1840's. Tiney may have married John in Rome NY before coming to Wisconsin by 1848. The 1850 census shows John as a hotel keeper at Neenah. In 1860 Tiney was a widow there with five children. She married James Rees in 1865 and moved to Harrison Township, Calumet Co WI. James had children from his previous marriage. The family was in Sherwood, Harrison Township, by 1870 and there again in 1880. In 1900 Tiney was living with bachelor son John at Plainfield, Waushara Co WI.

Census records indicate Tiney's children by John E. Jones were Caroline S., Emma A., John E., William A., and Mary L. Jones. Her children by James Rees were Harriet, Charles, George and James Rees.

2 Robert H. OFIELD, b Mar 1832 (in Utica NY, according to CW service record), d 9 Jan 1915, buried Natl Cem, Milwaukee WI. Census records of 1870 St Charles Co MO, 1880 Muskegon MI and 1900 Wauwatosa WI spell his name consistently as Ofield, as does his cemetery record. During the Civil War, recorded as Oldfield and Ofield, he served in Co K, 24th NY Cavalry, was wounded, and mustered out on 27 May 1865 at Harewood General Hospital, Washington DC. He applied for a CW pension in 1873, and was living in the National Soldiers Home in Wauwatosa WI in 1900 and 1910. At the time of the 1870 census at Portage des Sioux, St. Charles County, Missouri, he was married to Mrs. Sarah Currents. Occupation at that time was "fisher". There do not appear to have been any children of this marriage. While at the Soldiers Home he was described as a widower.

3 The 1840 census shows only the name of the head of household and describes the others in the household according to gender and age brackets. Two girls were born between 1830 and 1834. Possibly their names are mentioned in Susan's will. One girl, born around 1834, appears to be in John's 1850 household with a mistaken name. The older girl, who is absent in 1850, may have died or married before 1850.

4 Apparently a daughter, name unknown. John Oldfield's 1850 household includes the entry of "Charles", listed as a female born around 1834. Since there is a boy named Charles in the household, the census taker apparently miscopied the girl's name. This girl may have died or married and moved out of the household before the 1850 census.

5 Henry Oldfield, b ca 1838 Rome NY, d 3 Mar 1904 Bellevue Hospital, New York City; bur Rome Cem. Served in Co F, 24th NY Cavalry, during Civil War. Married before 1875 Louisa, b ca 1845. Censuses do not show them with children. She was active in the affairs of the women's auxiliary of the GAR, Union Civil War veterans organization. Henry received a CW pension and Louisa a widow's pension. The name Maria Y. Foster, a dependent, appears on their pension index card. Her relationship to Henry, if any, is not known.

(10) Edward Charles Oldfield, b 1842-1850, d 7 Apr 1925, m Jane "Jennie" Hawke, b Nov 1852 in England, d 1927, both bur Rome Cem. During the Civil War he served in Co F, 24th NY Cavalry. Military records have him as Charles E. Ofield and Edward O'Field. His age and date and place of enlistment are the same as for his brother William, that is: age 19, enlisted 5 Jan 1864 at Rome.

Records conflict regarding Edward's date of birth. Early censuses, those from 1850 and 1860, show him seven months old and 11, respectively, in each case making him at least two years younger than his brother George, who was born in 1847. In 1870 Edward is listed as 25, or born in 1845. If he was seven months old in the census taken on August 13, 1850, he may not yet have reached the age of 14 when he enlisted in January of 1864. The 1900 census says he was born in June of 1842 and later censuses reflect that. Gravestone says d 7 Apr 1925 at 82 years.

An 1892 Rome newspaper article reported that Edward Oldfield of Rome was a cousin of Joseph Trembeth. Joseph was born in Golant, Cornwall, England, around 1865. In 1940 the next door neighbor of Edward's son, Robert T. H. Oldfield, was William Trembeth, an 1895 immigrant from Tywardreath in Cornwall, two miles from Golant. A study of this Trembeth connection may lead to the locality in England where John Oldfield lived before immigrating.

Edward and Jennie (Hawke) Oldfield had children Robert and Emma.
