BROOKS, Isaac, 21, of Hamilton, was married to RECORD, Vatah, 21, of Smyrna, on Dec. 5, 1849 by Rev. Comfort Record, Smyrna, NY"
Comfort Record was an early settler of Smyrna, Chenango County, New York, in 1803. The first settler was in 1792.
Comfort Record died in May 1850 at age 82. A widower, he was born in Rhode Island.
One unconfirmed report has Comfort Record in Amenia, Dutchess County, New York, before his immigration to Smyrna.
I have recently learned that there is some great concentrations of descendants of Record, Rickard, Barber, Hopkins, and Brooks families in Smyrna, Norwich, and Oxford; Chenango County; New York. These large families had origins in seventeenth century Rhode Island and have been traveling together for several centuries. They moved from Rhode Island to Dutchess County, New York, just before the Revolutionary War; thence to Rensselaer County, New York; thence to Ontario, Chenango, Otsego, and Chautauqua Counties, New York, and Bradford County, Pennsylvania, as the Erie and Chenango Canals were constructed, permitting easy transit between the Mohawk River Valley and the Susquehanna River Valley as well as Lake Erie.
