Gene, I think I found your Webb family on the census in Madison Co. They were in the town of Lenox but in 1870 had an Oneida postal address. None of the other Webb families in the county had a son named William. In 1860 a William Gilbert was livng with the family & in 1850 a Jane Gilbert was with them. I think it`s very possible that William Gilbert was William`s maternal grandfather. In 1850 there was a William M. Gilbert in Lenox ( pg. 176) who was age 57, b. England, a shoemaker. His wife was Margaret, age 55, b.NY & they had a son Silas, age 19. Also with them was Maria Gardner, age 26 & George Gardner, age 3.
