I am looking for any information on my great-great grandfather, Sidney Earl Neal, b. 10/02/1834 in Canada. His family came to NY when he was an infant.
His father may be William Neal, but I have not been able to verfy this.
Sidney probably married in NY. He left NY about 1855 for Wisconsin, then Illinois, where he had a son, James Wescott Neal, b. 9/13/1859 in Mount Vernon, Illinois. James is my great grandfather.
I do not know who Sidney Neal married in NY. I have heard that it may be Eliza Purdy.
I have also heard that his wife's maiden name was Wescott, and that is where his son, James Wescott Neal got his middle name.
Sidney Neal's wife died by 1864 in Illinois. He then married Hannah Mariah Jones in Winnebago county, Illinois.
Hannah was 16 at the time of marriage. I believe her father was Peter Jones of Clayton, Jefferson County, NY.
Her mother was Matilda Jones.
The Peter Jones family all died early. Her mother died when Hannah was about 4. Numerous siblings all died young. They are all buried in the Chaufty Cemetary in the town of Theresa, except for Hannah.
I believe that Hannah Jones "went west" with Sidney and his first wife, possibly as a servant. When Sidney's wife died, he married Hannah.
I have done some research and found all the surnames listed at the Lyme Heritage Center in Jefferson County. I have written to them, but so far have not received a response.
I am trying to find any records of Sidney Neal in NY during the time period of about 1840-1855.
Does anyone have the Neal surname on their records during that time? I am looking for a connection between Neal, Purdy, Wescott or Jones.
I am also seeking any information on the parents of Sidney Earl Neal.
Any information is appreciated!!!
