Nicholas and Peter Harder, sons of Jacob P. Harder of Herkimer Co., moved to St. Lawrence Co. about 1832. Both had sons James born about 1830. We have placed James H. with Nicholas because he is found in the 1850 Census at Rossie near his brothers Michael and John. James H. Harder, who family lore says was born in a lock-tender's house on the Erie Canal, was a descendant of the 1710 Palatine immigrant Johann Michael Harter. He was a farmer as a young man but eventually moved to Alexandria Bay, Jefferson Co., where he became Chief of Police. He and his wife Sarah are buried at Walton St. Cemetery in Alexandria.
