Hi Erika,

The 1850 census of Jefferson County shows one CHAFEE family living in the Town of Hounsfield, right in the neighborhood my family lived in, as follows:

139 13 234 234 Chafee Ashbel 45 m Farmer 1000 NH
139 14 234 234 Chafee Celia 42 f NY
139 15 234 234 Chafee Victoria 9 f NY
139 16 234 234 Chafee Sarah 6 f NY

There is also a CHAFA family (a common variant spelling in Jefferson County) in the Town of Lorraine as follows:

359 20 2182 2210 Chafa Isaac 45 m farmer 450 NH
359 21 2182 2210 Chafa Jullia 35 f NY
359 22 2182 2210 Chafa Fedelia R 16 f NY
359 23 2182 2210 Chafa Mary M 12 f NY
359 24 2182 2210 Chafa Levi A 9 m NY
359 25 2182 2210 Chafa George C 7 m NY
359 26 2182 2210 Chafa Addia ? 4 f NY
359 27 2182 2210 Chafa Delos 2 m NY

I found this by searching Alice Corbett's website, where she has posted a searchable transcript of the entire 1850 census!: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~aliecor/index.htm

You can see maps of where the CHAFEE/CHAFA's lived in Hounsfield at the Hounsfield ALHN website: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/jefferson/hounsfield/

-- Go to the "MAPS" section, and on the 1864 land map you'll find "A.W. Chafa" (though the name is partially erased) at the bottom of the map in Lot # 15, then look at the 1855 map and you'll find "A. Chafa" in the same location (check the 1864 map first because the other one doesn't have lot numbers indicated).

The road their house was on exists today though it is a dead end at the easterly end. If memory serves me, there is someone living on the lot currently, though the buildings may be newer now.

You should also search the Jefferson County GenWeb site for variations of the name CHAFEE, such as CHAFFEE and CHAFA because there is a lot of material there - too much for me to post here:

I hope this helps!
