The new year seems like a good time to repost my brickwall
My ggg-grandfather was Elisha Grover. I have quite a bit of information on him. I know that he owned land in Halifax, VT, Guilford, VT, and DeKalb, NY. I have seen the deeds.
I know that he was married in Halifax, VT in 1801. I have seen this marriage record.
I know that his wife's name was Polly Bell and that she was the daughtere of Joseph and Janette Stewart. I have seen Joseph's will that mentions his daughter, Polly, wife of Elisha Grover.
I know that in 1815 he married Polly Smith in Guilford, VT. I have seen that marriage record. He gave his residence as Rutland, Jefferson County, NY. (I have not found any trace of Elisha in Jefferson, NY.) I know that he had at least one child with his first wifeborn in 1807. It was a son, named Joseph Grover. Joseph died in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. I have seen his death certificate and two obituaries. I know that with his second wife, he had at least one daughter, Seruah, who married Samuel Dunican. She was born in 1817. I have seen that marriage record and also the birth records of several of their children and her death record.
I know that there were at least three more children, one daughter that we haven't been able to locate and two sons. Landon and Elisha. Landon was born in 1830 in Leyden, according to his death certificate and several censuses. His death certificate give his mother as Polly Duncan or Dunican ( it is difficult to read) Son Henry was born in Halifax, Vt in 1835, His birth and death records give his aprents only as Elisha and Polly Grover.
Elisha was born around 1776. The first record I have of him is when he purchased land in 1798. (I am assuming that one had to be at least 21 years of age to own land) He doesn't show up as a head of household on any census in 1800.
Although he was married in 1801 He doesn't show up as head of household in the 1810 census even though Joseph Bell's will (proved in 1805) tells me that his wife inherited a cow that she borrowed when she and her husband "set up house."
In 1820 Census records show Elisha and his family in DeKalb, NY.
In 1830 census records show Elisha and his family in Leyden, Mass.
In 1840 census records show Elisha and his family in Sunderland, VT.
There is no record of him after 1840. His widow died in 1854 in Leyden, Mass.
I have checked land records, census records, warnings out in VT., probate records, books on town histories, and cemeteries. I have been stuck here on Elisha for about 15 years. Can anyone tell me anything about my Elisha or suggest another place to look. I think my next step might be a medium. : )
Sorry this is so long. I have quite a bit of information on Elisha, just not who his parents were or when or where he was born.
You know, the stuff I REALLY need.
