I am trying to track down (at some remove in both time and space) information on my ancestors in Jefferson County (Cape Vincent).
My great grandfather, James Folger Allen, was born in Cape Vincent on 27? December 1840. He was a ship's captain on the St. Lawrence and Lake Ontario. He worked many years for and with the Folger brothers (shipping), and I assume from his name that he was related to them in some other way as well. He lived much of his adult life in Kingston, just across the River from Cape Vincent (if you disregard Wolfe Island). He died in Des Plaines, IL, in 1910, and was buried in Cape Vincent according to Masonic rites. The family is listed in the Kingston city guide/census as Anglican, but the obituary says he attended the First Congregational Church in Kingston.
JFA's father moved to Cleveland, OH, in 1860. We have no clue as to his name or his subsequent history.
My great grandmother, Leora S. Morton, we know next to nothing about, other
than that she survived her husband and remained in Kingston for some years.
Date of decease, etc., unknown.
I have numerous other details on the original JFA (my name, too, as well as my father's), but no information on his wife, Leora S. Morton, or his father (name unknown) or any other ancestors.
Can you give me a clue as to where to begin research on this?
Jim Allen (James Folger Allen)
