Robert - the items from NEHGS are just abstracts & you can't get the original will from there. BUT we got lucky... at SAMPUBCO there is a will for Elwell, Samuel Dutchess 1774 (one L ) NY-1AE-22, under Albany County at Sampubco. There is also Ellwell, Samuel ( two L's ) Southeast Pct Dutchess 1783 NY-1-AE-39, also under Albany County. Early wills were also filed in New York County and there one finds Elwell, Samuel Jr Sout Dutchess NY-31-30-286 and Elwell, Samuel Southeast NY-31-36-42.

There is also a will there for Isaac of Southeast NY-14-B-190. In my wanderings I have found nothing for a Thomas.

Looking under double L at NEHGS I found: 30 Sep 1780/ 21 Dec 1786 Ellwell, Samuel of South East Pct, Dutchess Co. Wife___, heirs of son Samuel Dec'd, sons Jabez and Isaac, heirs of dec'd daughters Mary, Esther & Sarah, daughters Elizabeth, Grissel and Deborah. Real and personal estate. Executor son Isaac. Witnesses Thomas Ragon of S E Prect, tailor, Mary CHapman and Moss Kent.

Sampubco is a great service...just be sure to follow all the instructions very carefully. Have lots of patience too....about the time you have given up they will arrive in the mail. I suppose you could go the route of writing/calling the Clerk's office in Albany too.

Have you checked with Frank Doughtery - Settler's of the Beekman Patent, the NYG&B or Putnam County ? ( Putnam from Dutchess around 1812 & seems to be lots of related Elwells there) Vicky
