Lovisa Rice, from Deleware County, New York, married our ggg-grandfather, Benjamin Sheldon, from the same area. Our family Bible notes that she was born on July 8, 1796. Any connection? How would I go about finding her parents?
After several years, a trip to Ohio, two trips to the local LDS History Center, and other extensive research (newspapers, etc.), I have been unsuccesful in finding her parents and where she fits in the Rice family history.
I have online access to the US Census records, but as we know, only heads of households are listed in 1840 and prior records. This is noted so that the work is not duplicated.
We have copies of our family Bible, which is where we were able to obtain some of our information. It was in her son's (my gg-grandfather) David F. Sheldon's handwriting.
I hae a copy of her death record, at that time only a chronological list of names, dates, and causes, but not parents' names.
This is some of what we know. Benjamin (Sheldon Family Association #6161) was b. July 07, 1791 in Delaware County, NY, m. Lovisa RICE on January 22, 1815. She was b. July 08, 1796 in Deleware County, NY. Benjamin d. July 17, 1870 and Lovisa d. September 09, 1870, both in Lorain County, LaGrange, Ohio. They moved sometime in the late 1840's to Ohio, the exact dates of their move are unknown.
They are buried at LaGrange Cemetery, LA-1, (p. 326), and I visited their gravesite in November 2004, in the LaGrange Twp. Cemetery. Their headstones are a tall pyramid type of white marble, and Lovisa's is weather beaten and difficult to read. Benjamin was a veteran of the War of 1812.
LOVISA: Little seems to be known about who her parents are or their RICE lineage. There seems to be some confusion as to the spelling of her name, however, we believe it is LOVISA. The SFA spells it Lovice (out of print Sheldon Magazine), and I have seen it spelled Louisa and Lovica. However, our family Bible spells her name Lovisa, and her headstone and death record are spelled "Lovisa" -- (death record being sent to me at this time...and I haven't actually seen it). Also, descendants of her daughter Ann, (m. Giles Ripley), are also named Lovisa.
They lived in NY with their seven children until about 1850. Their children are: NELSON(b. March 1816, d. April 3, 1816), SALVINIA (msp?) (b. 1817, m Woodmansee, Bradley; d. ?), GEORGE (b. 1819, d. 1897 in Eaton County, MI), BENJAMIN (b. 1821, d. 1897, m. Luthy (Lucy) C. White, ANN (b. 1824, d. 1862 in MI) m. Giles Ripley (I also visited their headstones in the Kalamo, MI, cemetery in November 2004), DAVID (our gg-grandfather, b. 1829, d. 1913 in MI, m. Adaline Crandall - both at rest in Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet, Eaton County, Michigan), and James (b. March 11, 1831, d? - in Wellington, Ohio).
As noted, in the late 1840's, the parents and most of this Sheldon family moved to LaGrange, Lorain County, Ohio. The date of 1850 is estimated based on DAVID's purchasing his freedom from family responsibilites about that time so that he could marry Adaline Crandall. This is a note from a book entitled "Eaton County Past and Present." Although the notes in this book are extensive, the information is not all correct. For example, it says that Benjamin and Lovisa past their whole lives in NY, when we know they moved to OH where they are buried and from Census records.
From a Lorain County 1870 Census reading of LaGrange Township, BENJAMIN's occupation is that of a Farmer. It spells Lovisa's name "Lovica." It is noted that they had a domestic servant named Manda Riffle, also b. in NY. This Census was taken just before Benjamin's and Lovisa's deaths in 1870.
Benjamin "Jr." "Moving Buildings" is also in that same Census, and appears to live next door to "Sr." This Census notes: Lucy C, 44, keeping house, b. NY; Dexter 22, Laborer, b. NY; James 16, b. OH; Silvina 14, b MI; Lucy A. 7, b. OH.
