I am looking for evidence to determine as to whether or not my gt-gt-gt-gt-grandfather, Obadiah Evory (1775-1854), was a son of Robert Evory (b NY ca 1740; d Middleton, Delaware Co, NY, Dec 7, 1790), of Marbletown & Rochester, Ulster Co, NY, by his wife, Phoebe Wildey (b NY ca 1733-44; d NY ca 1831-34). There exists some circumstantial evidence to indicate that Obadiah may have been a son of Robert & Phoebe Evory. Obadiah Evory & his wife, Alche Vermilyea (1773-1853), are buried in the Evory Family plot in Durham’s Stonebridge Cemetery, & just over to their right, stands the gravestove of Phebe Evory. The inscription reads, “Phebe, wife of Robert Evory. died January 7 (or 1?), 1834 (or 1831?), aged 98 years.” Her stated age is remarkable for that time, unless her family got her age wrong. In 1775, New York State had a population of only 75,000 to 80,000 people. How many married couples would there have been back then in New York by the names of Robert & Phebe Evory? Although the 1790 Census lists Robert Evory as residing in Ulster County, he apparently died on Dec 7th, 1790, up in Middleton Township in Delaware County to the northwest of Ulster County. To my knowledge, there exists no record of the date of Phebe Wildey Evory’s death, or of a cemetery containing her gravestone, unless her gravestove is the one to be found in Stonebridge Cemetery. Or was she buried alongside Robert (who had died more than 40 yr earlier) in a grave in a Delaware County cemetery? After Robert’s death in 1790, did Phebe perhaps go to live with Obadiah & Alche Evory at Durham in Greene County, about fifty miles or so to the east? Traditional family naming patterns can provide clues to family relationships. Robert & Phebe had a son Uriah (b ca 1770-80), a good Old Testament sounding name like Obadiah. Phebe’s father was John Wildey [or Wilde], & Obadiah’s eldest known son was John W. Evory. “W” for Wildey perhaps? Obadiah’s eldest daughter was Phebe Evory (1797-1827), 1st wife of Matthias Van Tassel Jr (1791-1868), my gt-gt-gt-grandparents. Was Phebe (b 1797) perhaps named after her Grandmother, Phebe Wildey Evory? Phebe Wildey Evory’s eldest brother was Obadiah Wildey. Did Phebe name a son after her big brother? I would very much like to obtain copies of the wills of Robert & Phebe Evory, if such exist, since the lack of 18th century birth & christening records makes research more difficult. Any information any of you good folk out there in Genealogy Land can provide will be greatly appreciated. Cheers! Count Caragata |
