ICH: from Rochester Genealogical Society, Inc. 1998 Hugh and his wife Elizabeth resided at Lyme, CT until moving in 1806 to Chenango county NY. Their six sons moved to Western NY at the same time. Hugh wrote his will on 26 Aug 1816 at Preston, Chenango, NY. He left his six sons his 372 acre farm in Preston after Elizabeth's death and cash to his four granddaughters named DOWITH. He made his son Nehemiah executor. The estate was inventoried in Nov 1816. In 1825 Nehemiah bought his brothers' shares of the farm. Under the will, the farm was supposed to remain in tact until Elizabeth's death http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~whosefamilyisit/johnsmith.htm Note: marriage: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ct/county/fairfield/ctch14.html First Congregational Church, New London, CT Note: 1.1 Hugh Smith was born ca 1740 near Lyme, New London, CT died fall of 1816 at Preston, Chenango, NY (probate) married ca 1763 to Elizabeth ______ who survived her husand and probably died in ealry 1825. Chidlren at Lyme, New London, CT 1.1 Clarissa Smith born ca 1763 married a Dowith (ICH: surname spelling, it may be Dowitt) Children of Clarissa listed in her fathers will: 1.1.1 Clarissa 1.1.2 Polly 1.1.3 Almira 1.1.4 Laura 1.2 Hugh Smith born ca 1765 died after April 1825 perhaps in Genesee county NY. ICH: from Rochester Genealogical Society Inc 1998 On 15 April 1825 Hugh's youngest brother Abel, acting as Hugh's attorney, sold to their brother Nehemiah for $113 Hugh's 62 acre share in their father's 372 acre farm in Preston, NY. Because the deed mentions no wife for Hugh, it is evident he was than single perhaps widowed. Hugh is a good candidate to be the father of Josiah and Jerial Smith, tentatively listed here as his sons. Of the six sons of Hugh Sr. the mirgrant from CT to Chenango county NY, only Hugh and his younger brother Jerial did not remain in Chenango county NY but settled farther west in NY state. Of these two brothers, Jerial seems a shade young to have been the father of the two men listed bleow.
