ICH: from Rochester Genealogical Society, Inc. 1998 Hugh and his wife Elizabeth resided at Lyme, CT until moving in 1806 to Chenango county NY. Their six sons moved to Western NY at the same time. Hugh wrote his will on 26 Aug 1816 at Preston, Chenango, NY. He left his six sons his 372 acre farm in Preston after Elizabeth's death and cash to his four granddaughters named DOWITH. He made his son Nehemiah executor. The estate was inventoried in Nov 1816. In 1825 Nehemiah bought his brothers' shares of the farm. Because the deed mentions no wife for Hugh, it is evident he was than single perhaps widowed. Hugh is a good candidate to be the father of Josiah and Jerial Smith, tentatively listed here as his sons. Of the six sons of Hugh Sr. the mirgrant from CT to Chenango county NY, only Hugh and his younger brother Jerial did not remain in Chenango county NY but settled farther west in NY state. Of these two brothers, Jerial seems a shade young to have been the father of the two men listed bleow.
