I have no documentary evidence that the Chenango County couple Daniel and Olive Brooks are related to the Gates and Phoebe Brooks couple. However, the history of American migration shows that a few families settled on the Eastern seaboard in the seventeenth century and migrated westward along lines of latitude, leaving geometrically expanding numbers of descendants. Siblings and cousins migrated together. Distant cousin marriages are common, forming family braids rather than family trees. These family braids remain economically and politically important today through intrafamily communication networks.
In conclusion, the common surname of the two husbands, Brooks, suggests, but does not prove, a common ancestor.
