He died in the VA hospital in Reno? Hmm, is his child who is your parent still alive? If so, then your parent is Lawrence's next-of-kin and, I believe, able to access his military service and medical records. Check out
http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/ to see what you can get and how. Seems to me that his medical records from the VA hospital might (if they didn't burn in the 1973 fire) tell you who was listed as contact person while he was in the hospital.
The only other route I can think of is approaching the mortuary/funeral home who handled funeral preparations, with evidence of kinship in your hand, in the hope of obtaining information regarding whose funeral and burial instructions they followed.
No guarantees, but who knows maybe one, the other, or both routes will bring you closer to finding more.
BTW does the death certificate list an informant who provided biographical details for certificate completion?
