Hi Bradly,

I am by no means an expert but I didn't see anyone replying to your message. I figured there would be someone who would know a lot more then I do about the Hat Ranch.

I have a book that was written by a Taylor in that part of the country. In one chapter it talks about Will Taylor working for the Hat Ranch. In her book, she only talks about the Hat Ranch being in the southern part of Eddy County about twelve or fifteen miles southeast of Monument Springs.(Hope your familiar with that part of the country)

There is also a map showing the boundry of five ranches that take up the whole area of Lea County. There is no date on it, so I have no idea what time period it shows. It does show "Hobbs" as being "New Hobbs". The five ranches were the Four Lakes Ranch, Hat Ranch, High Lonesome Mallet Ranch, Merchant Land and Cattle Co. and JAL Ranch. According to this map, the Hat Ranch goes completely across Lea County. It shows the boundry to be just north of Lovington and South of Monument.(Older names that I can't find on my map are South of Nadine.) The High Lonesome takes up the corner on the North East side. If that doesn't totally confuse you, try looking on a modern map and following those directions.

I don't know anthing else. The book does not mention the name you wanted to know about. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. If I find out anything I would be happy to let you know.

Rebecca
