Hi Ian,

There is a Peter McConnell who arrived April 17, 1923 aboard the "ASSYRIA"

New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 about Peter Mcconnell
Name:       Peter Mcconnell
Arrival Date:       17 Apr 1923
Birth Date:       abt 1899
Birth Location:       Scotland
Birth Location Other:       Glasgow, Scotland
Age:       24
Gender:       Male
Ethnicity/ Nationality:       Scottish (Scotish)
Port of Departure:       Glasgow, Scotland
Port of Arrival:       New York, New York
Ship Name:       Assyria
Search Ship Database:       Search the Assyria in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database

He is shown as going to Patterson, NJ
and his contact in Scotland is
Mother - Mrs. Barbara McConnell, 10 N. Tay St. Dundee
Peter is listed as a calendar worker
He paid his own passage
and his contact in US is his friend Stuart Clark, 17 Redwood Ave., Paterson, NJ
Peter is 5' 9", fresh complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, born Glasgow

Since he had a daughter named Barbara this does seem like it could be the right fellow - arriving right year also

There is a SSDI entry for a Myrtle McConnell April 19, 1996 Barnegat, Ocean, NJ
birthdate shown as April 27, 1907

Since 1930 census showed Myrtle as born NJ I looked for any Myrtle girls in 1920, born about 1907 NJ - both parents born NJ

There are more than I would expect so will try to find a different way to find her maiden name.

The 1901 census for Scotland has only one Peter Mcconnell with mother Barbara

Walter, age 36, cycle builder, born Glasgow

Barbara, age 34, wife, born Glasgow

Elizabeth, age 8, daughter, scholar, born Glasgow

Barbara, age 7, daughter, scholar, born Glasgow

Peter, age 2, son, born Glasgow

Walter, age 27, cycle fitter, born Glasgow

Barbara, age 25, wife, born Glasgow

Walter, age 10 months, son, born Glasgow

Since son Walter is not with them in 1901 he may have died young OR could be visiting relatives ?

I did not find a Walter Mcconnell in 1881 but there is a Walter Connell of right age. I'll give you the census just in case it fits. I am not seeing the image of the census, only the indexed entries and I am wondering if the M. after each name is actually part of Mconnell ?

Catherine M., age 40, head, born Glasgow

Peter M., age 20, butcher born Glasgow

Walter M., age 16, boot cutter born Glasgow

Elizabeth M., age 12, scholar born Galsgow

Mary, age 42, sister, shop keeper, born Glasgow

it does not show if Mary is single or not so cannot tell if Copeland is Catherine's maiden name or not

I have not been able to find them in 1871 but this may be them in 1861

Michael, age 23, flesher employing 1 man, born Rutherglen, Lanarkshire

Catherine, age 19, wife, born Glasgow

Peter, age 8 months, son, born Glasgow

???? could the family have gone to Canada and then Catherine and children return to Scotland??

I did not find them in 1871 Scottish census but when I looked for Michael I found a man of right age in Ontario, Canada and when I looked for him in 1871 census it seems to match

MCCANNELL (as indexed)

Michael, age 33, butcher, born Scotland

Catherine, age 30, born Scotland

Peter, age 10, born Scotland

George, age 8, born Scotland

Walter, age 6, born Scotland

Isabella, age 3, born Scotland

Ann, age 40, born Scotland

1891 son George is not with the family but he would be 18 so could be on his own

I looked for a death for Michael in case that would be a reason for Catherine to return to Scotland and this looks likely

Ontario, Canada, Deaths, 1869-1938 and Deaths Overseas, 1939-1947 about Michael McConnell

He must have done something pretty bad as it says:
Michael Mconnel, died March 14, 1876
born Scotland
cause of death: Hanged in accordance with justice pronounced
on him by Judge Moore
Informant: Thomas White, of Hamilton

I looked for the family coming into Canada and here they are:Catharine and children but Michael not there so he may have gone before them but I haven't found him in the passenger lists

Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935 about Catharine McConnel

The image shows:

Catharine, age 30

Peter, age 10

George,a ge 8

Walter, age 6

Isabella age 11/12

********************* has a possible marriage for Michael and Catherine

Michael Mcconnell married Cathrine Ritchie June 7, 1859 Milton, Glasgow, Lanark which would fit possibly as the couple I found above had a son Peter born 1860 and he seemed to be their first child ?

Its odd that I cannot find anything on Myrtle and Peter and their marriage.

Since you have the names of Peter and Myrtle's 3 children and since they were born from 1931 - 1939 they are most likely still living so perhaps you could find them and they should know their mother's maiden name.

However, at there is a death for a Peter S. McConnell, Feb. 23, 1945 Netherlands
his age is not shown but it says he inducted from New Jersey
he received the Purple Heart medal

World War II and Korean Conflict Veterans Interred Overseas about Mcconnell
Name:       Peter S Mc Connell
Inducted From:       New Jersey

Death Date:       23 Feb 1945

I don't know if this is same Peter or not.

I think this is all I can find for now.
