Two years earlier, he had a severe accident. While cutting wood he fell and struck his head against a log. Two weeks later he became ill from the effects of his fall. He had not seemed "just right". Since last June his dementia was more frequent. He left home Wednesday evening and wandered to his brother Alexander's house, arriving there at 2 am, cut and bleeding from falls against the rocks. He didn't know his daughters' names and thought Lena was dead. Louisa testified that he had always been a hard worker, that he was a carpenter and would never neglect anything. He was 53 years old, born in Ohio, and they had lived in Montana 18 years, having come from Nebraska.
Daughter Laura was married and living at Deer Lodge.
