Thank you, Cullen. I appreciate your help. I have found information about who adopted her - William & Sophie Butcher and that she ended up in Atlantic, Cass, Iowa in 1900 where she married William F. Bailey. They had one known child - Helen and were living in Omaha, Nebraska in 1920. She knew her sisters that were also given to other families in 1866 in Knox County, IL when her mother died. They were Margaret (Seth) Clay of Omaha, NE and Elizabeth (Frank) Wetmore of Adair, IA. I don't know if they ever saw their brothers, William and John again or not. OR if they saw their elusive father again - Robert Paterson who was born in Scotland in 1825, lived in Canada from at least 1851 until 1866. Their mother died in Galesburg and he gave the girls away but kept the boys. They showed up in Schuyler County, IL in the 1880s when they got married. William, my husband's great-great grandfather, lived in Schuyler until he moved years later to Douglas, WY. John, the other brother, lived and died in Dexter, Cowley County, KS. I am not sure what happened to another boy, James, who is listed in a 1861 Canadian census. I can't find anything about him yet. Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate the responses people have given me.
