The convict was John McBride. He burglarized a hardware store and shot a policeman there. His true name was George Bullock and he was raised of respectable parents who have lived in Geneva since 1871. He was 33 in 1899 and lived a life of a robber and murderer since he was 18 years old.

1880 census, Geneva, Kane, Illinois

But what is really fascinating is that as George Bullock, he had already confessed to murdering and robbing people in 1891.

Chicago Herald 12/1/1891
Confession of George Bullock
He was a Nebraska convict in Lincoln NE, #1679. 11/17/1889, he burglarized the house of Gardner Stevenson of Harlan Cty, got convicted, and received a 5 year prison sentence. He confessed to two murders in Geneva IL 5 years ago. 8/28/1886, Harry Esty and a "Pennsylvanian" started a burglary spree and two police officers chased them. George shot Policeman McNett and Policeman Grant, killing them both. George escaped and went to his uncle's farm in NE, 17 miles north of Alma. He was not suspected in the crime. Harry Esty was captured, pled guilty, and was sentenced for 10 years in Joliet. His parents lived in Aurora, and he was a minister's son.
He also confessed to killing a woman in fall 1888, and killed the Widow Buckmeyer, who discovered them burglarizing her home. She was strangled, her throat was cut,and she was dumped in her outhouse.
He also said that he shot a man in South Bend IN while committing a burglary but didn't know if he killed him or not.

The authorities in Geneva didn't believe him, the murders of the two policemen were actually done 10/29/1885, and the second murder was on 9/13/1886, it was Julia Buckmeyer.

He served two terms in the IL penitentiary and one in NE before being in Stillwater.

But I can't confirm the Guide Rock shooting.

This is John/George, and I think he was b in June 1864. He was from Jackson County MN and was serving 3 y 5 m for assault.
