You can get a good idea of "when" he died by looking at his probate papers. Most people reported a death within a week, followed by the appointment of the administrator. The date of the Administration Bond will give you an idea of when the death was reported. If there is no bond in the file, the administrator had (usually) 90 days to return an inventory of the estate.
Have you checked to see if he served in the Civil War? Many diseases were contracted during the war years by both soldiers and their families. Supposedly 2/3 of those who died on the Union side died of disease; 1/3 were killed or died of wounds. Aaron may have been one of those who returned home exhausted and ill.
