Saluda was incorporated as a town in 1881. At that time Saluda was in Polk County. However, A little crossroads community became know as Pace's Gap probably as early as 1785 and was in Rutherford County until 1791. At that time, Pace's Gap became a part of Buncombe County. It then became a part of Henderson in 1838 and was a major stop over for livestock drovers moving herds to the mountains for grazing and to South Carolina for market. Polk County was created in 1847 and Pace's Gap became a part of Polk. It then reverted back to Henderson with the dissolution of Polk in January 1849. It bacame a Part of Polk again in 1855 when Polk was reinstated as a county and has remained in Polk since. Shortly after the railroad came to the area, it was named Saluda in honor of a Cherokee festival named for the Green Corn and supposedly a Chief by that name.
