Can anyone shed light on my brick wall?
In the 1850 census for Granville County, there is a woman named Zilpha Allen with four children: Elizabeth, Francis (Marion Francis), Elias and Eli (Elijah). A fifth son, Erasmus is married and living nearby. I have been stuck on this family for some time.
My husband is descended from Francis.
Recently I found a record in Elias' civil war papers, where he states that he "was born in Pitt County, but now lives in Granville County." He was born about 1841.
So, sometime between 1841 and 1850, the family must have moved to Granville County. I have been unable to locate a marriage record for Zilpha Allen or determine who the father of these children were. The Pitt County courthouse fire has probably destroyed any references to this family.
There are three Allen families listed in Pitt county in the 1840 census. If anyone has researched these families and has a clue to the origins of my Allens, I would be very greatful.
Thanks, Barbara Allen
