I have mapped the first land grant in the area which is now Pitt County; this was a grant of 2000 Ac. to Capt. Richard Smith, 10 Jun 1706. The location of the grant is not clear from the grant itself, as neither Tranter's nor Grindall Creeks were named at the time, but subsequent sales of the land make the location clear; it occupied the fork between Tarr River and Tranter's Creek, running along the river as far as the mouth of Grindall Creek.
