One of the most intriguing people ever to settle in Dahlonega, Lumpkin Co., GA during the Gold Rush era was HARRISON W. RILEY (1804-1874) who came to GA about 1831 from Person Co., NC. He became the richest man in the area, owned a large amount of land and slaves and held many public offices during the last 30 years of his life. He never married but fathered many children by several women, both black and white. He has many descendants all over the US.
He had two brothers and a sister, maybe other siblings. JESSE L. RILEY (1801-1866) who also moved to Dahlonega. HORACE LAWRENCE RILEY who was still in Person Co. in 1837 but may have moved to TN. And a sister MARY P. RILEY who married JOHN M. HARRIS and first moved to TN but then to Dahlonega also.
The name of their father is unknown at present; however, their mother was SUSAN RILEY (1787-1856) who came to Dahlonega in the 1840s.
I would like to correspond with anyone researching this family of the Riley family of Person Co., NC.
