I think that you will find that the descendants of Alexander COHARON settled on the surname COTHRAN or COTHRON, even CAUTHRON, in the Caswell & Person Co (formed from Orange) area. Alexander's name appears several different ways, owing to the phonetic spelling, or lack thereof, of barely literate clerks. He even shows up as COWHORN in the Caswell Petition (1771). Other surname spellings include CAUGHRON, COCHRAN, etc. His son John stayed in the area long after Alexander's death and his name appears as COTHRAN or COTHRON. I have never seen any reference to CAHOON, CALHOON, etc. |
