Absalom M. Ridings, son of Joel Ridings and Penelope May, was b. 2 March 1803, probably in Orange Co., NC, and d. after 1860, when he was on the census in Henderson Co., TN.
He m. 6 May 1826, Humphreys Co., TN, Sarah (Sally) Gately, b. c1805, TN; d. after 1860, daughter of William Gately, b. by 1785, d. c1823, Stewart Co., TN, and Mary Chambers, b. c1790, Montgomery Co., NC, d. after 1860, when she was in the same household in Spains Post Office, Henderson.
Absalom, a blacksmith, and Sarah were parents of Susan and Sarah Ridings, b. c1827, and perhaps a third daughter, b. c1830; William J., b. c1831, d. after 1880, Haywood Co., TN; Mary E., c1835; James Crayton, c1838, d. after 1870, Milan, Gibson Co., TN; Henry Harrison, 23 Apr 1841, Carroll Co., TN, d. 29 Aug 1935, Vandervoort, Polk Co., AR; Thomas H., c1843/1844, Carroll or Henderson Co., TN, d. after 1879, Milan P.O., Gibson Co., TN?, and Mary Jane, b. c1846, Carroll or Henderson, d. after 1860, Henderson?
Henderson Co., TN was torn asunder during the Civil War, split between supporters of the Union and the Confederacy, as was Absalom's family. His son Henry moved to Sevier Co., AR and joined the Confederate army. Absalom's youngest son, Thomas, still in Henderson in 1863, joined Co. K, 27th TN Infantry, CSA, and Co. B, 7th TN Volunteer Cavalry, USA.
When the Federal Direct Land Tax was assessed in Henderson in 1865, no Ridings/variant was listed in District 1. Where did Absalom, Sarah and their daughters go? Did they move to Missouri? Arkansas? Haywood or Gibson Co., TN with their sons?
Appreciate any clues to Absalom, Sarah and their descendants
