I'm posting a follow up to this posting.

Tracking records, it appears that the husband of Frances "Fanny" (maiden name unknown) was not a William Turner but rather a John Turner.

1840 Census, Tippah Co. MS

line 4--John Mellon
1 M 30-40
1 F 30-40

line 11-- James Turner
1 M Under 5
1 M 20-30
1 F Under 5
1 F 20-30
[note: James Turner married Jane Mellon 1 Oct 1834 in Lincoln Co. NC. Her father was Jonathan Mellon. The Mellon family is said to have owned property in both Lincoln Co. NC and York Co. SC]

line 12 -- Robert Turner
1 M 20-30
1 F 20-30

line 21 -- John Turner
2 M 15-20
1 M 50-60
1 F 40-50 (I believe this will be Frances "Fanny" Turner)

1845 State Census of Tippah County MS:

John C. Melton----- 1 M---1 F (John C. Mellon)
James Turner-------2 M---3 F
William Turner-------1 M---1 F
John Turner---------1 M---1 F
David Turner--------1 M---0 F
[These Turner names were enumerated adjacent each other and John C. Melton (sic) was 4 names separated from them]

Robert Turner-------2 M---2 F

All the patents issued to these Turner men were granted in 1843 and the records indicate that when they applied to enter the land, they were listed as "of Hardeman Co. TN." I suspect that when they initially applied to enter the land to acquire the patents they were actually living in Hardeman Co. but by the time the patent process was completed and they were issued the final papers, they were already over in Tippah Co. MS.

There does not appear to be a patent in the name of John Turner but he appears to be on the 1845 State Census so must have died prior to the 1850 Census.

Frances Turner, age 62 F, born in VA was living with John C. Mellon and his wife Rosanna in 1850 and with widow John C. Mellon in 1860 (she was listed as age 74 born VA).

In 1870, she is living with son William Turner in Alcorn Co. MS which had just been formed partly from Tippah Co. MS. She was listed as age 80 born VA.

Thus, I think that the listing of William Turner as her husband's name is probably incorrect.
