Tommy,
My family lived in Franklin County. Both my 3rd and 4th GG's
were named Thomas Colvard/Calvert/Colbert. My 4th GG was married to Sarah LNU (possibly Wood). He lived in Halifax Co., NC from 1758 to 1768 and was a blacksmith and owned an ordinary (tavern). In 1768 he moved to Bute Co (now Franklin
and Warren). He was born ca 1720 on Plumtree Island (now Mush
Is) on the Roanoke River and next to the town of Weldon.

His son Thomas was born ca. 1770 and was in the first Fed
census in 1790 in Franklin Co. The census taker spelled his
name as Colbert, and the family has gone by that name ever
since. However, when Thomas died in 1846, he signed his will
as Thomas Colvard.

Thomas Colvard had a grandson named Archibald Jackson Colbert. He was the illegitimate son of Hicksey Colvard, his daughter. The father of AJ is unknown. However, there was
a person named Archibald Jackson that lived in Franklin when AJ was born (1830).

Do you know anything about this Jackson?
And, where do your roots come from?
Richard
