Roberta, from research done by my cousin, James Gillespie Hopkins;
Exum Philip Whitfield was born in Nash Co., N.C., 22 April 1818. The 9 July 1846 issue of the "Telegraph and Texas Register" published in Houston, TX, has an advertisement for the White House Hotel. E. P. Whitfield and J. O. Bracken were proprietors of this newly fitted up hotel on the corner of Main and Preston, opposite the telegraph office.

E. P. Whitfield and Miss Margaret M. Thompson, both of Houston, TX, were married there 14 February 1847

In 1850, the Victoria Co., TX, census lists him with wife Minerva and son Philip. On 1 February 1853 a daughter was born and died. His wife Margaret M. (Minerva)Whitfield died there 11 days later on 11 February, 1853.

This doesn't help your cause but it is possible that Margaret M. moved to Houston on her own or with parents. I don't know if Victoria Co. had a newspaper back then which might have an obituary with more information. Good Luck!
