Another new year is well underway. So it is time for me to post my elusive BATES ancestor once again in case there is someone new who might be able to help.
John A [probably Augustus] BATES was born between 1795 and 1800 in Rutherford County NC. By 1830 he was married with 6 children and living in Macon County NC. By 1840 he was in Cherokee County NC where he remained until his death in 1861. He was originally buried in the Davidson-Bates Cemetery in Cherokee County and moved in 1937 to the BATES Private Cemetery.
He married Margaret [aka Lou] CUNNINGHAM.
They had a large family, most of whom stayed in the Cherokee County area.
John Jr. born abt 1823 who married Mary
Elizabeth born 1821/1825 - never married but had issue
Margaret D born about 1826 - never married
William F 1827-1877 - married Jane ROGERS
Mary Ann 1832- married John Alexander HARTNESS
Marcus L born abt 1835
Clarinda A 1835-1923 - married Benjamin Franklin LOVINGOOD
Salina 1838-1927 never married
Noah A born about 1840 - served in Civil War
Leonidus 1841-1860
James M 1843-1862 - civil war casualty
Julius Pinkney abt 1846-1919 married Elizabeth FARMER
1860 census shows an Emaline BATES age 2 - however I don't really believe this to be a child, perhaps a grandchild.

I also believe the oldest son might be Samuel W BATES of Fannin County GA 1820-1902
