Can anyone help with identifying the family of Ruemma Athaline Knight who married Thomas H. Ammons (son of John Jackson Ammons) on 21 Jun 1845 in Macon Co., NC? I'm beginning to suspect her parents could be Levi and Elizabeth Knight but have no proof of this. The Knights and the Ammons both lived in the Tennessee Valley area of Macon Co. in the same time frame. Ruemma was born circa 1830-31. Census records give both Macon Co, NC and TN as her birthplace. These records also say her parents were both born in TN. In 1850 Ruemma is listed as Athaline, age 22. In 1860 she is listed as Ruema, age 30. In 1900, the Macon Co. census records for Thomas and Ruemma's son, James W. Ammons (my great grandfather), show an aunt Ellen Woodard, born in Nov 1829 in NC, living with James and family. Ellen's parents were born in TN. I have yet to identify Ellen but I know she was not an Ammons, thus, was probably Ruemma Knight's sister. Since Ellender/Eleanor was a name used in the Levi Knight family it's possible Ellen was a derivative or nickname. I further believe that Ruemma was more commonly known by her middle name, Athaline, as this was the name given in the death record of one of her daughters. If anyone can offer any help with the Knights and particularly these two ladies, Ruemma Knight Ammons and Ellen "Knight" Woodard, I'd be most grateful. Susan Davis |
